2 crew hurt as passenger vessel catches fire off Lapu-Lapu City

CEBU CITY — Two crew members were injured when a passenger vessel caught fire in the waters off Lapu-Lapu City past midnight Saturday, July 16.

MV Trans Asia 1 caught fire about 100 meters from the shore of Barangay Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu. 

Lt. Junior Grade Krysta Bergantin, spokesperson of Philippine Coast Guard-Central Visayas (PCG 7), said the incident was reported to their office at 1:55 a.m.

Bergantin said the vessel had been stuck in the area since December.

“It ran aground at the height of typhoon 'Odette,'" said Bergantin.

The vessel was manned by seven crew and one security guard.

Investigation to determine the cause of fire is ongoing, Bergantin said.

The two injured crew members were taken to the hospital. They reportedly sustained burn injuries and complained of difficulty in breathing due to the thick smoke. 

Personnel of the PCG 7 Special Operation Unit have been deployed in the area to conduct perimeter check around the vessel.

According to Nagiel Bañacia, head of the Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, the vessel was supposed to be pulled out from the area this month.
