Police arrest suspected bomber in Zamboanga City after gunfight

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A notorious bombing suspect was wounded during a reported shootout with the police in Barangay Lamisahan, Zamboanga City on Friday, July 15.

P/Major Paul Cortez, Zamboanga City Police Information Officer, said the suspect identified as Jainal Assan, 35, sustained a gunshot wound in the thigh and was taken to the Zamboanga City Medical Center for treatment.

At 6:20 a.m., combined police units went to Assan’s house in Sitio Kapuk and served search warrants for violation of the laws on Illegal Possession of Firearms and the 2002 Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

During the service of the warrant, Assan reportedly tried to escape from the lawmen while engaging the police in a gunfight.

Police personnel retaliated, hitting Assan on the arm and the thigh.

Police recovered a .45 caliber pistol loaded with bullets, P350,000 worth of shabu in sachets, drug paraphernalia and improvised blasting caps with fuses from Assan.

Authorities also found three improvised shotguns and ammunition from a rooster stall near his dwelling place.

Meanwhile, lawmen also held a certain Salam Salasim y Doro, 45, for questioning. Salasim was reportedly caught with a .357 magnum revolver loaded with ammunition during the operation.
