Magnolia showed better resolve in overtime and turned back Meralco, 97-88, to stretch its win streak to five games in the 2022 PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum on Friday, July 15.

The Hotshots shrugged off the Bolts' comeback attempt, scoring the first five points in the extra period to take the driver's seat before banking on their patented defense in the final minutes to book a spot to the quarterfinals with their sixth win in nine games.
Aris Dionisio first drained a booming triple before Ian Sangalang scored on a short stab to put Magnolia ahead by five, 91-86, early in the extra period. Calvin Abueva, after being hampered with foul trouble all game long, made his presence felt on the defensive end, providing huge defensive stops to hold the Bolts without a single field goal in overtime.
The dreaded backcourt trio of Mark Barocca, Jio Jalalon and Paul Lee led the way for the Hotshots. Lee, on his second game since recovering from injury, topscored with 21 points, while Barocca scattered 20 points, six assists and five steals. Jalalon chipped in 19 points and eight assists, while Sanggalang posted a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds.
It seemed like Magnolia would safely cruise to the victory after taking a comfortable 85-81 lead with eight seconds left. Bong Quinto, however nailed the huge triple to cut the lead down to just one with three ticks remaining in regulation.
Jalalon had the chance to ice the game with two free-throws but split his charities, allowing the Bolts to still make a last ditch attempt with Quinto making the game-tying putback at the buzzer off a short three-point heave from Cliff Hodge.
Newsome put up a team-high 24 points while Quinto and Aaron Black added 13 points apiece. That however went down the drain as they couldn’t preserve its two-game winning streak against the red-hot Hotshots for a 5-4 win-loss slate.
