Defending champion Carlo Biado pulled off a pulsating 11-10 victory over Poland’s Wictor Zielinski Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) to barge into the quarterfinals of the men’s 9-ball singles at the World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Biado, also the reigning US Open titlist, saw his 7-4 lead vanish when Zielinski tied it at 10-all, but remained composed as he clinched the round-of-16 victory.
The triumph arranged Biado a quarters meeting with former world champion and world No. 3 Albin Ouschan of Austria.
Ouschan outplayed Aden Carl Joseph of South Africa, 11-8, to open his title campaign.
Meanwhile, Rubilen Amit will debut in the women’s 9-ball singles Thursday (Friday in Manila) against Germany’s Pia Filler.
Filler is an 11-time German national champion and has been competing in the Euro Tour.
Amit, for her part, is a world 10-ball champion and a two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist.
