As full in-person classes set to resume, Duterte asks public to get Covid-19 jabs

With the government’s plans to implement full face-to-face classes in basic education by November, Vice President and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sara Duterte urged the public to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

In an interview on Thursday, July 14, Duterte once again urged the public to get Covid-19 jabs as well as boosters as the government eyes the full implementation of in-person classes this incoming school year (SY) 2022-2023.

“Ang panawagan po namin doon sa pamilya na meron pong mga high-risk na individuals sa loob ng bahay nila na magpa-bakuna po sila at magpa-booster na po yung mga high risk at may co-morbidities dahil meron silang exposure sa mga bata na papasok sa paaralan (Our call to the families who have high-risk individuals in their homes is for them to get vaccinated and receive booster especially those who high-risk and those who have comorbidities because they have exposure to children who will go to school),” Duterte said.

Duterte also confirmed that the SY 2022-2023 will start on Aug. 22, 2022, and will end on July 7, 2023.

The guidelines released by DepEd highlighted the re-opening of classes and the gradual introduction of five days of in-person learning modality classes.

As stated in DepEd Order No. 034, series of 2022, “there will be no inspections, tools, or any additional requirements to re-open schools and implement five (5) days of in-person classes will be required, except for the compliance with the usual pre-pandemic regulatory permits and licenses, as required by law or ordinances.”

Moreover, DepEd has only prescribed the options of five days of in-person classes, a blended learning modality, and full distance learning until Oct. 31, 2022.

Beginning Nov. 2, DepEd said that all public and private schools must have transitioned to five days of in-person classes.

DepEd stressed that “no school shall be allowed to implement purely distance learning or blended learning” except for those implementing Alternative Delivery Modes.

Meanwhile, asked if she would support calls to make Covid-19 vaccination mandatory in preparation for the implementation of full face-to-face classes, Duterte said: “I won’t comment on that.”
