Meralco rips Ginebra to boost playoff hopes

Meralco used a balanced attack to rip Ginebra apart, 90-73, and gave its playoff hopes a huge boost in the 2022 PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday, July 13 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Bolts always looked a step ahead of the Kings throughout the game as Chris Banchero, Chris Newsome, Aaron Black and Cliff Hodge took turns in keeping Meralco afloat against the repeated rally from Ginebra to list its fifth win in eight games and force a three-way deadlock at the fourth spot of the standings.

Newsome led the attack with 19 points while Banchero added 17. Hodge held his own against Ginebra's twin towers of Japeth Aguilar and Christian Standhardinger with 14 points and eight rebounds while Bong Quinto finished with 10 and Raymond Almazan had six points and 15 rebounds.

It was a wire-to-wire win for the Bolts as they rode a strong first half to take a comfortable 18-point lead at the break behind two quick hits from Banchero before the halftime buzzer.

Ginebra though displayed its comeback genes anew in the third frame as it tried to rally back from the huge deficit and cut the lead to just 11 courtesy of a 9-2 opening spurt at the onset of the second half.

Newsome, who scored eight of his total in the third frame then took charge as the Bolts quickly recovered from the initial Kings run and established the biggest lead at 22, 77-50.

Refusing to just roll over and surrender, the Kings continued to threaten in the payoff period after trimming the lead to 12, 78-66, after a John Pinto trey. Ginebra, however, just couldn’t find the extra push to break the double-digit barrier as Black, Hodge and Newsome delivered timely hits to douse the Kings' rally.
