The low pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon will continue to bring rains over several areas in Luzon in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Wednesday, July 13.

In the PAGASA’s 11 a.m. weather advisory, the LPA was last spotted 185 kilometers (km) northeast of Aparri, Cagayan or 150 km east of Calayan, Cagayan at around 10 a.m.

PAGASA said the weather disturbance remains less likely to develop into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours.

However, the combined effects of the LPA and the southwest monsoon, locally called “habagat,” may bring rains over several parts of Luzon.

Moderate to heavy rains may persist in Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Pangasinan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bataan, Cavite, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan, while light to moderate with, at times, heavy rains may affect the rest of Ilocos Region, the rest of Cordillera Administrative Region, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, and Batangas.

“Under these conditions, scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazards maps and in areas with significant antecedent rainfall,” PAGASA said.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers because of the habagat and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA also warned the public against flash floods or landslides that may occur during severe thunderstorms, which are often accompanied by sudden heavy rains, lightning, thunder, gusty winds, and sometimes hail.
