TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded nine dengue fatalities in Eastern Visayas (Region 8).
Jelyn Malibago, DOH-Region 8 information officer, said the rise in the number of dengue cases is alarming but it is not as alarming as that of the outbreak in 2019 in which they recorded 26,263 cases and 75 deaths.
She added that based on trends, they have observed that dengue cases usually increase in three to four years.
DOH-Region 8 recorded nine fatalities – two from Maasin City, one from Liloan, and one in Padre Burgos in Southern Leyte; one from Jaro and one Ormoc City in Leyte; one from Taft and one in Hernani in Eastern Samar; and one from Calbayog City in Samar.
Leyte has logged the most number of cases with 979, followed by Southern Leyte with 878 where most of the victims are aged three to four-year-old.
Clustering of cases has been observed in 47 barangays – 12 from Leyte, three from Ormoc and Tacloban City, 18 from Southern Leyte, and two from Eastern Samar.
Malibago said that they have strengthened surveillance, health promotion, education, and advocacy activities and have conducted meetings with local government units and other partner agencies in order to mitigate the further increase of cases and deaths caused by dengue in the region.
