Marcos, Cabinet tackle concerns on budget, infra, transport, industry, tourism

Picking from what they left off in the first Cabinet meeting, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. led his second meeting with his Cabinet members on Tuesday, July 12, focusing on budget, infrastructure, transportation, industry, and tourism.

Marcos presided over the Cabinet meeting virtually as he remains under isolation after testing positive for Covid-19. The meeting lasted for more than five hours, over an hour longer than the first one held on July 5.

According to Angeles, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) discussed the budget for fiscal year 2023 that would promote "broad-based and inclusive" economic recovery and growth.

The Build, Build, Build infrastructure program crafted by the previous administration was also discussed, including other infrastructure convergence programs of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Priority transportation programs of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) was also among the focus of the meeting. During the first Cabinet meeting, the expansion of the fuel subsidy program to tricycle drivers and the implementation of a free rides program for students riding the LRT 2 were approved by the President.

In a message to reporters, Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra said that the agenda during the meeting was "quite heavy" as it also included matters in the areas of industry and tourism.

The meeting started at 9 a.m. and ended at 2:25 p.m., Guevarra said.

During the first Cabinet meeting, the agency executives were told to streamline the bureaucracy and work on transitional matters so they could fully focus on more pressing matters in their succeeding meetings.
