LPA, 'habagat' may continue to bring scattered rains over parts of PH
The low pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon may still bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over some parts of the country in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in a weather advisory on Monday, July 11.
PAGASA said the LPA, which was estimated at 290 kilometers east of Legazpi City, Albay as of 10 a.m., remains less likely to develop into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours.
However, light to moderate with, at times, heavy rains may prevail over Palawan, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Quezon, Samar, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, and Bicol Region due to the combined effects of the LPA and the southwest monsoon, locally called “habagat.”
“Under these conditions, scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazards maps and in areas with significant antecedent rainfall,” PAGASA said.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers because of the habagat and localized thunderstorms.
PAGASA also warned the public against flash floods or landslides that may occur during severe thunderstorms, which are often accompanied by sudden heavy rains, lightning, thunder, gusty winds, and sometimes hail.
