Gatchalian favors reviving history as a single subject in schools
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Monday, July 11, said he is in favor of restoring history as a separate subject in the high school curriculum.

Gatchalian, in a televised interview, noted that history has been incorporated with other subjects, making it difficult for students to fully comprehend lessons in history.
“Pag-aaralan natin yan kung gagawing single subject ulit or hindi. Dahil hindi naman natanggal ang history, naisama lang sa iba’t ibang subject (We will study whether or not History will be another single subject or not. It was not removed, but merely merged with other subjects),” Gatchalian said in an interview on GMA-7’s “Unang Hirit.”
“So pag aaralan natin kung iyan ay gagawing single subject ulit (So we will study whether we can again make it as a single subject again),” said the senator who will chair the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture.
Gatchalian, likewise, said his panel will take up proposals regarding the use of Filipino as a medium of instruction in schools.
The lawmaker noted that learners from Kindergarten to Grade 3 are taught in schools using their mother tongue, but the medium of instruction shifts to English immediately in Grade 4.
“Kaya kailangan na rin pag-aralan natin yan ng mabuti (So we really need to study these proposals also),” Gatchalian said.
