An infectious disease expert believes that it's "high time" to mandate Covid-19 booster vaccination for the general population in light of the surge in cases being experienced in the country.

Dr. Rontgene Solante, during the Laging Handa public briefing on Monday, July 11 stated that booster uptake in the country is still very low at less than 20 percent of the target population. This is low also in comparison to the boosted populations of other countries like Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
According to Solante, these countries have attained 50 percent of the target population in terms of booster doses. He added that these countries are also implementing a similar vaccination program yet the uptake in the Philippines remains to be low.
"So I think it’s high time that we need to mandate the booster vaccination to the general population," he said.
"Kailangan (It needs to be) mandatory na siguro para lang ma-increase natin ang (I think, so that we can increase our) protection especially now we are preparing for the face-to-face classes in November and the workplaces are also open now," he added.
On the other hand, Solante mentioned that a weak surge in Covid-19 cases is currently underway given that the positivity rate and the number of newly-infected individuals based on that positivity rate is starting to increase.
He mentioned that it's above 10 percent now especially in the National Capital Region.
