'Habagat', LPA to bring scattered rain showers across parts of PH

Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may prevail over some parts of the country in the next 24 hours due to a low pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its public weather forecast on Sunday, July 10.

PAGASA said the LPA was last spotted 685 kilometers (km) northeast of Surigao City or 690 km east of Virac, Catanduanes.

The weather disturbance still has a slim chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, said weather specialist Samuel Duran.

However, he said that PAGASA will continue to monitor the LPA for possible intensification while still over the sea.

Scattered rain showers are expected over Eastern Visayas, Caraga, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, and Masbate due to the LPA.

Duran said another LPA was spotted 850 km west of Central Luzon or outside the country’s area of responsibility. 

It has a high chance of becoming a tropical depression but has no direct effect on any part of the country, he added.

In the next 24 hours, the southwest monsoon or “habagat” may also bring scattered rains over Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

PAGASA advised those in these areas to remain vigilant against possible flash floods or landslides caused by “moderate to at times heavy rains.”

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers.

The public was also warned against flash floods or landslides that may occur during severe thunderstorms, which are often accompanied by sudden heavy rains, lightning, thunder, gusty winds, and sometimes hail.
