Enrique Manalo appointed as new DFA chief

Seasoned diplomat Enrique Manalo has been appointed as the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) chief under the administration of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.

Manalo replaced DFA Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. after being sworn in by Marcos Jr. on Friday, a Facebook post from Philippine Ambassador to New Zealand Gary Domingo confirmed.

Domingo said Manalo is "the best choice among the career foreign service."

Manalo, who is the country's permanent representative of the Philippines to the United Nations, served as undersecretary of DFA prior to his appointment.

Manalo also served a short stint as the head of DFA, from March 9 to May 17, 2017 under the Duterte administration, when Perfecto Yasay's ad-interim appointment as DFA chief was rejected by the Commission on Appointments.
