Effect of 'habagat' weakens, as storm Domeng nears PAR exit

Tropical storm “Domeng” (international name “Aere”), which enhanced the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” is expected to leave the country’s area of responsibility on Saturday, July 2, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Friday, July 1.

With the imminent exit of the storm, PAGASA said that the effect of the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat” is also expected to further weaken.

In its 11 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said that the effect of the southwest monsoon has weakened but will continue to bring scattered light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms over Ilocos Region, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, and Kalayaan Islands in the next 24 hours.

PAGASA also said that tropical storm Domeng and severe tropical storm “Chaba” (formerly “Caloy”) will bring “occasionally gusty conditions reaching strong breeze to gale-force in strength over extreme northern Luzon, northern and western portions of Luzon, and western portion of Visayas.”

“These conditions are more likely in coastal and mountainous/upland localities of these areas,” it said.

The center of Domeng was estimated at 995 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon at around 10 p.m.

If it maintains its current track, PAGASA said that Domeng will already be outside the country’s area of responsibility by Saturday morning or afternoon.
