'Domeng' intensifies into a tropical storm

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that tropical depression “Domeng” (international name “Aere”) has intensified into a tropical storm on Friday morning, July 1.

In the next 24 hours, it is expected that Domeng and severe tropical storm “Chaba,” formerly Caloy, will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”

PAGASA said that “moderate to heavy rains” will prevail over the Kalayaan Islands, while “light to moderate with at times heavy rains” will be experienced over Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, and the rest of Palawan.

“Under these conditions, scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazards maps and in areas with significant antecedent rainfall,” PAGASA warned.

As of 10 a.m., tropical storm Domeng was estimated at 940 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon. It has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

It may further intensify into a severe tropical storm with a peak intensity of 95 kph between Saturday afternoon and evening, July 2.

Based on its latest track, PAGASA said that Domeng will probably exit the country’s area of responsibility by Saturday morning or afternoon.
