LRT-1 private operator Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) teamed up with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for disaster preparedness via resources, expertise and facilities sharing.
As part of the initiative, LRT-1 employees and partners are undergoing Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS) training under DOST's Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
PHIVOLCS developed the REDAS software to simulate earthquake hazards, such as ground shaking, liquefaction, landslides, and tsunami.
The software can also compute earthquake impact in terms of physical damage, casualties, and economic loss.
“The transport sector is very vulnerable to natural hazards," noted DOST Undersecretary and PHIVOLCS Officer-in-Charge Renato U. Solidum, Jr.
"Immediately after a disaster, the transport sector should be revived to open the metropolis, and have access in and out of this area," he underscored.

Last year, the DOST-REDAS Team piloted an introductory training program for LRMC employees.
The pilot program covered Basic Map Reading, Understanding Geological Hazards, Earthquake and Tsunami Alerting Module (ETAM) Familiarization, Satellite Rainfall Monitor (SRM) and Seismic Hazard Assessment (SHA) Familiarization.
This year, they expanded the program to include LRT-1 partners, with in-depth focus on issues, such as Data Acquisition and Impact Assessment.
"The REDAS software has become our tool of choice during times of natural calamities," says LRMC Head of Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality Department Dr. Louernie De Sales.
"In times of disruptive incidents, our main task is to ensure the continued delivery of service at acceptable levels. REDAS has been a vital component in addressing the planning requirements of disaster monitoring and risk reduction," the executive elaborated.
For this reason, LRMC decided to extend the same training to its Local Government Unit (LGU) partners along the LRT-1.
"This is to have a concerted, harmonized, and systematic effort to strengthen our emergency preparedness,” according to de Sales.
The recent 5-day hybrid REDAS training was held virtually from June 6 – 10, 2022 at the LRT-1 Depot in Baclaran.
Partners include the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine National Police (PNP) Pasay, Pasay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), Pasay City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Barangay 190 Pasay City, Caloocan City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CCDRRMO), Department of Public Services (DPS) – Manila, Parañaque City Risk Reduction and Management Office (RRMO), Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (QCDRRMC), Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), Metro Pacific Tollways South Management Corporation, NLEX Corporation, and Awesome Ways International Services.
"We never know when the next earthquake will come but we should always be prepared," remarked Pasay City LGU Chief of Staff Peter Eric Pardo.
"Preparedness and knowledge lessen damage to lives and properties," he concluded.
