REFLECTIONS TODAY
Fulfilling the Law does not mean obeying the Mosaic Law to the letter, but to adhere to the “spirit” of the commandments, as intended by the Lord who gave them to Israel. Jesus certainly followed the Sabbath rest and the traditional forms of piety like fasting, prayer, and thanksgiving. However, he put more importance to delivering people from their ailments and the torment of the impure spirits, and so he healed even on the Sabbath. He also pointed to the root causes of the violation of the commandments which must be uprooted, like lustful thoughts that lead to adultery, or anger that leads to murder.
Gospel • Matthew 5:17-19
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”
