Valdez hopes to etch own name after drawing comparison with close pal Perez
The relationship between Lyceum forward Enoch Valdez and San Miguel Beer star CJ Perez goes beyond their similarities on the court.

Valdez, who was one of the revelations for the Pirates in NCAA Season 97, drew comparisons with the SMB guard who had also suited up for Lyceum and guided the school to a Finals appearance in Season 94.
Asked about the comparison with Perez, Valdez was quick to shrug it off as he hopes to etch his own name in Lyceum and in the NCAA.
“Malayo pa eh, iba 'yong CJ Perez pero idol ng lahat 'yon pero malay mo makagawa rin ako ng hindi CJ Perez, pero Enoch Valdez na pangalan,” said Valdez after he was awarded with the NCAA All-star MVP last Sunday, June 5.
Valdez also revealed he has close ties with Perez, even getting some advice from the 2019 PBA Rookie of the Year and the two-time league scoring champion.
“Lagi niya lang ako giniguide kasi nag-i-extra (work) kami. Nag-uusap lang kami kapag may laro ako, sinasabihan niya ako,” shared Valdez.
The connection between the two was rooted not just in the similarity of their plays on the court but also in their lives outside of it.
Even their shoe sizes were the same as Perez often lent some of his to Valdez.
“Parang kapatid talaga eh kasi lagi kami magkasama nung teammate kami sa Lyceum, araw-araw kami magkasama kasi parehas kami Ilokano, parehas kami walang tatay, mga sapatos ko nga lahat bigay niya lang swerte ko ka-size ko sya,” added Valdez who had a hearty laugh.
Valdez, though, hopes that the similarity between them doesn’t end there as he looks to replicate Perez’s efforts that allowed the Pirates to reach elite status in NCAA a few years back.
“Kailangan namin pagtrabahuhan, wala kaming sasayangin na pagkakataon para mag-improve. Titignan nalang namin 'yong result."
