Phivolcs warns of 'irritation, breathing problems' due to to ashfall from Bulusan Volcano
Fine ashfall can cause irritation and breathing problems, especially among the vulnerable population, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned on Sunday evening, June 5.

In its latest Bulusan Volcano bulletin issued at 8 p.m., Phivolcs disclosed that the 10:37 a.m. phreatic eruption from Bulusan Volcano summit crater produced plumes that rose more than a kilometer high.
Ashfall has been reported in the following barangays: Puting Sapa, Añog, Guruyan, Catanusan, Buraburan, and Sangkayon in Juban and Bolos in Irosion, Sorsogon Province.
“Fine ashfall can cause irritation and breathing problems especially among the vulnerable population – the elderly, children, expecting mothers, and those with respiratory disorders – and can be particularly dangerous when inhaled in copious amounts,” said Phivolcs.
The institute added that exposure to “high amounts” of sulfur dioxide may cause irritation.
Affected individuals were urged to protect their nose and mouth by using highly protective masks such as N95 or wet cloth and towel.
Apart from ashfall, rumbling sound and sulfurous odor were likewise observed in Barangay Añog, Guruyan, and Catanusan in Sorsogon, said Phivolcs.
Meanwhile, Alert Level 1 status remains in effect over Bulusan Volcano. This indicates that the volcano is currently in an “abnormal” condition. Entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited.
