Following a phreatic eruption on Sunday, June 5, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised Bulusan Volcano’s alert level status from 0 to 1.

Phivolcs, in an advisory issued as of 11:40 a.m. on Sunday, said that the phreatic eruption occurred at the Bulusan Volcano summit and it lasted for approximately 17 minutes.
“The event was poorly visible through cloud cover over the edifice although a steam-rich grey plume at least 1 kilometer tall was observed from Juban, Sorsogon,” said Phivolcs.
In the past 24-hour period before the eruption, a total of 77 earthquakes were recorded at Bulusan.
With these occurrences, Phivolcs raised Bulusan Volcano’s alert level status from 0 to 1. This means that the volcano is currently in an abnormal condition.
“Local government units (LGUs) and the public are reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) must strictly be prohibited and that vigilance in the 2-kilometer Expanded Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeast sector must be exercised due to the increased possibilities of sudden and hazardous phreatic eruptions,” Phivolcs warned.
