'Domeng' to remain far from PH landmass, PAGASA says

The low pressure area (LPA) spotted east of northern Luzon has developed into tropical depression Domeng. It is expected to gradually accelerate north-northwestward over the next three days and remain far from the Philippine landmass, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Thursday, June 30.

Domeng’s center was last spotted 930 kilometers (km) east of extreme northern Luzon. It has maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph), gustiness of up to 55 kph, and it is moving northwestward at 15 kph.

Although it is expected to remain far from the Philippine landmass, this weather disturbance, together with tropical storm Chaba – now outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), formerly called Caloy, is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon locally called “habagat.”

“In the next 24 hours, the monsoon trough and the southwest monsoon enhanced by tropical depression Domeng and tropical storm Chaba will bring monsoon rains over the western sections of central and southern Luzon,” said PAGASA in its bulletin issued on Thursday afternoon.

No tropical cyclone wind signal is currently hoisted due to Domeng. The state weather bureau likewise disclosed that it may exit PAR on Saturday, June 2. Outside PAR, this weather disturbance is expected to “pass very close” or make landfall in the vicinity of the Ryukyu Islands.
