A look at the newly restored facade of La Loma Chapel

After its restoration last May, the La Loma Chapel now has a striking white and yellow façade. The new color choice is based on “residues and material evidence found during our chipping off the wall’s layers of plastering,” according to Escuela Taller de Filipinas Foundation Inc.

To make the restoration possible, which took them 11 months to finish, Escuela Taller worked with the Diocese of Kalookan. Located in the middle of Cementerio General de la Loma, the chapel was built as a response to environmental and health concerns during the Spanish period. It is declared a National Cultural Treasure, the highest designation given to a valuable cultural asset.

On June 27, Spanish Ambassador, H.E. Jorge Moragas, accompanied by Instituto Cervantes - Manila's Javier Galvan, visited the newly restored chapel.

Escuela Taller de Filipinas Foundation is a non-profit school that trains out-of-school youth in skills and trades related to heritage conservation. It was established jointly by the Spanish and Philippine governments in 2009 through the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (ACEID) and the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA).

Graduates of the school were involved in the restoration of the chapel façade. The establishment of the school and its continued operation is a testament to the commitment of the two governments to save shared cultural heritage, and also serve marginalized communities and sectors in the Philippines.
