Zamboanga City reports P1.9 M losses due to African Swine Fever infections

ZAMBOANGA CITY - The Zamboanga local government has reported P1.9-million in losses due to the African Swine Fever (ASF) infection in Zamboanga City.

Dr. Mario Arriola, City Veterinarian, said a total of 389 hogs were culled as part of containment and depopulation measures.

The local government extended financial assistance to 133 hog raisers after their pigs were infected.

ASF infection affected areas of Canucutan in Barangay Pasonanca; Sitio Udjung, Bungiao; Sitios Lower and Upper in Barangay Mangusu; Sitio Presa, Curuan; and Sitio Corote, Manicahan.

Zamboanga City is prohibited from shipping and transporting pork products out of the city after the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) placed Zamboanga City under the Red Zone category.

Arriola said they are also very strict in accepting pork products from Luzon and Davao because these, too, are red zone areas.

Arriola said it will take up to 180 days for Zamboanga City to revert its status from the red to the green zone.
