Wesley So bested Dutch Anish Giri in Armageddon play to stay at second place behind leader Vishwanathan Anand of India after three rounds of the 10th Norway Chess tournament in Stavanger on Friday, June 3.

So drew with Giri in 31 moves of a Nimzo-Indian Defense in the standard part to force the Armageddon tiebreaker where he, playing black, settled for another draw in 44 moves of a Ruy Lopez.
It was enough to seal the win.
Based on rules, the player with the black pieces still gets the win with a draw.
The result put So within striking distance behind Anand with six points. Anand currently has 7.5 points.
It was the third straight win for So after he trounced Azerbaijan’s Teimour Radjabov in standard in the first round and pulled the rug from under reigning world chess king Magnus Carlsen via another Armageddon duel the next day.
A win in standard play is equivalent to three points while a triumph via a playoff blitz game is worth 1.5 points.
Anand, a former world champion who honed his playing skills in the Philippines, gained points on wins over Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France and Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in classical, and Wang Hao of China in a playoff.
So is seeking to win in this annual tournament for the first time.
