Magnitude 5.6 quake jolts Caraga — Phivolcs

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in Caraga region at around 2:54 a.m., Friday, June 3, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the earthquake at 31 kilometers (km) northeast of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur, and was shallow at a depth of 16 km.

It was “moderately strong” at Intensity IV in Cagwait, Bayabas, and San Agustin in Surigao del Sur.

Meanwhile, it was felt as a “weak” tremor at Intensity III in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur and Rosario, Agusan del Sur.

Phivolcs’ instrument also recorded the quake at Intensity III in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur and Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Intensity II in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur and Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte; and Intensity I in Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental, Malaybalay City in Bukidnon, Surigao City, Abuyog in Leyte, and Malungon in Sarangani.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur due to this earthquake.
