UP Visayas opens gallery featuring traditional Filipino garments, locally produced textiles

The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) formally opened the “Panapton" Gallery at the Iloilo City campus Main Building and Museum Complex on Monday, June 27.

As per a report posted on the UPVs website, the gallery showcases traditional Filipino garments such as baro (dresses), camisa (undergarments), pañuelo (scarf), barong, traje de mestiza (mestiza gowns), panyal (baptism garments), and saypang (panay-bukidnon clothing).

The clothes were embroidered using patadyong, hablon, sinamay, cotton, and piña.

The gallery also houses locally produced textiles.

The garments and textiles feature how the people of Panay Island cover themselves "not only for protection but also for identity and expression."

The opening ceremony was attended by UPV Chancellor Clement C. Camposano, Office of Initiatives for Culture Director Martin Genodepa, donor of collection pieces Mario Yang, UPV Vice-Chancellors Philip Ian Padilla and Rhodella Ibabao, Professor Emeritus Alicia Magos, Center for West Visayan Studies Director Randy Madrid, and Project Development Assistant of the Office of the Chancellor Anna Razel L.
