Benilde crushes Mapua to remain unscathed in NCAA volleyball

College of St. Benilde made short work of Mapua, 25-17, 25-11, 25-12, Tuesday to keep its record pristine in NCAA women’s volleyball at Paco Arena in Manila.

The Lady Blazers crushed the Lady Cardinals on all fronts to finish the game in 61 minutes – the fastest in any matches this season.

The win extended St. Benilde’s winning streak to five games and also tightened its hold of the top spot.

Jade Gentapa and Mycah Go scored 12 points apiece for the Lady Blazers, who dictated the game tempo from start to finish.

St. Benilde started strong with an 8-3 lead which ballooned to 18-9 following a variety of shots from Gentapa, Go and Michelle Gamit.

The Lady Cardinals showed better floor defense in the second and third set, but it didn’t stop the Lady Blazers from attacking the net at all angles.

Despite the win, St. Benilde coach Jerry Yee said there is still no room for complacency.

“I did not expect anything. We prepared for them lang. We had lapses we needed to work on,” Yee said.

Mapua’s lackluster plays were evident as they managed only 19 attacks, one block and two aces.

Eleven of those attacks only came from Therese Manalo and Raina Vergino.

In contrast, St. Benilde fired 41 kills, four blocks and six aces.

Mapua skidded to its second loss in five outings with no players scoring in double figures.

Manalo finished with seven points while Vergino managed five points.
