Image specialist says BBM has zero vanity: 'Pagkaligo niya, OK na'

As the camp of Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. counts the days to the inauguration, the President-elect's official image specialist revealed on Monday, June 27 that Marcos has "no vain bone in his body".

According to Jay Herrera, the incoming Philippine leader tends to "take his appearance for granted".

“Hindi siya vanidoso, hindi siya ganun ka-conscious sa kanyang appearance. Si sir, kung ano ang itsura niya pagkaligo niya, OK na sa kanya ‘yun (He's not vain, he's not that conscious about his appearance. Sir is the type who's fine with his look after bathing, that's already OK with him). As is, where is," he said of Marcos.

"Kaya minsan may mga pictures siya na may part ng buhok niya na nakatikwas (Sometimes he has pictures where he has some fly-away hair),” he added, candidly.

“Kaya ‘yung mga ganun ang babantayan ko para ma-maintain ang dignified appearance niya. Kailangan maayos siya tingnan lagi (Those are the things I will be on the lookout for in order to maintain his dignified appearance. He should always be nice to look at). I will also assist him in dressing,” Herrera also disclosed.

Marcos's inauguration will take place at the National Museum on June 30.

Herrera has also been incoming First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos's (LAM) image specialist for the past eight years.

But for now, he has been given marching orders to concentrate on the incoming president. “I suggested for LAM to get her glam team but it would still be up to her,” he noted.

Herrera recalled how he started working for the Marcos family when President-elect Marcos was still a senator.

“When he was still a senator, he had an interview with GMA so they searched for an artist and I was recommended. His staff suggested na gawin kong mukhang bagets si BBM so ginawa kong parang Korean ‘yung buhok niya, wavy (to make BBM look young so I gave him a Korean style hairdo, wavy),” he narrated.

“Nung nakita niya, sabi niya (When he saw it, he said), ‘What did you do to my hair?’ Kaya akala ko (That's why I thought) that would be my first and last time to work for him,” said Herrera.

Much to the image specialist's surprise, he was called again after a few weeks for another interview.

This time, he said, he asked Marcos first for his suggestion and was satisfied with the style that Herrera did. “Ginawa kong sleek ‘yung buhok niya ( I gave him a sleek hairdo)."

Though at first, hindi pa siya sanay kaya pilit niyang binababa until sa naging comfortable na din siya with the style at naging trademark na niya,” he added.
