Briones to work with the incoming administration as a 'consultant'

The Department of Education (DepEd) Transition Teams, led by Briones and Vice President-elect and incoming Education Secretary Sara Duterte, held their first in-person meeting on June 25 at the DepEd Office of the Secretary in Pasig City where they discussed the next steps for the agency.

During the meeting, Briones reiterated her assurance that Duterte has the “full support” of the DepEd in this transition period.

Briones, DepEd said, also agreed to “continue to work with the incoming administration as a consultant.” No further details were provided as of press time.

During a public briefing in May, Briones said that in preparation for the transition period, DepEd prepared for the first time a medium-term plan, the Basic Education Development Plan (BEDP) 2023, which is a strategic roadmap to improve the delivery and quality of basic education in the country.

Briones said that with the BEDP 2023, DepEd hopes for the continuity of programs under the current administration.

“We are looking forward to a smooth transition,” she explained. “We are looking forward, hopefully, with great hopes for continuity of the programs that are working very well,” she added.

The outgoing DepEd leadership, Briones said, is also looking forward to a discussion of the BEDP 2023. “I am very, very sure that the incoming Secretary of Education will keep an open mind,” she explained in a mix of English and Filipino.

Aside from continuity of programs that have worked out, Briones expressed hope that the incoming DepEd administration will emphasize initiatives related to equity as well as to “taking care of those who don’t have a chance to participate in education processes.”

Briones also expressed optimism that the benefits of teachers will also be of utmost priority under the new leadership as well as the curriculum which underwent several adjustments due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
