LPA, southwest monsoon may bring rains over most of PH before June ends — PAGASA

A potential low pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon, locally called “habagat,” may bring rainy weather over most of the country before the end of the month, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Saturday, June 25.

In the next 24 hours, the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, may bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Agusan del Sur, and Surigao del Sur, and Davao Region.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or localized thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, weather specialist Benison Estareja said that a low pressure area may develop inside the country’s area of responsibility by Monday, which could enhance the effect of the habagat in the next few days.

He said PAGASA sees two scenarios for the LPA.

In the first scenario, he said an LPA may develop near Eastern Visayas at the start of the week.

“From Monday to Tuesday (June 27-28), the LPA may traverse the eastern part of the Philippines towards the eastern part of Luzon. By Tuesday (June 29), the LPA may cross Northern Luzon and enhance the southwest monsoon, which could bring rains over Luzon, Visayas, and western part of Mindanao,” Estareja said in Filipino.

In the second scenario, Estaeja said a circulation or LPA may form near Eastern Visayas or Caraga Region by Monday.

“From Monday to Tuesday, the LPA will likely cross Visayas towards Mimaropa (Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan). Rains are also likely to affect most parts of southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao,” he added.

Estareja noted that regardless of what scenario will happen, most of the country may experience rains in the coming week.

He advised the public to stay vigilant against possible flash floods or landslides due to possible heavy rains.
