Blackwater mauls Terrafirma for best start in PH Cup

The Blackwater bench hasn’t been in a loud and festive mood for quite some time now especially during the long and agonizing 29-game losing streak in the past two seasons.

That, however, certainly changed on Saturday, June 25, at the Ynares Center as the Bossing cruised to a stomping 107-70 victory over the lowly Terrafirma Dyip, sustaining on what is currently their best start in the Philippine Cup in franchise history.

The Bossing rode a furious second quarter where they shot the lights out en route to a 36-point showing while limiting the Dyip to just 20 points.

The back-breaking run proved to be the difference as Blackwater showed no letup in the second half, dealing Terrafirma a thorough beatdown to improve to a 3-1 record with the 37-point triumph – the team’s largest margin of victory in its seven seasons in the league.

Six players scored in double digits for Blackwater led by rookie Ato Ular who had 16 points while Jvee Casio added 14 markers. Yousef Taha was also solid with a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds while James Sena, Mark Dyke, and Barkley Ebona chipped in 11 points apiece.

While elated by the solid showing of his team, Bossing head coach Ariel Vanguardia refused to celebrate just yet as they still have a long way to go if they really want to bury their infamous record as a thing of the past.

“We can’t celebrate too much kasi every team has the capability to beat each other,” said Vanguardia who also lauded the effort of his bench players like Dyke, Richard Escoto and Rey Publico.

“I don’t want to be a killjoy but we haven’t achieved anything yet. We just broke Terrafirma’s four game winning streak against our franchise so the next games are gonna be tough games for us. We just scout this game, forget about what happened today and move on to the next one,” said Vanguardia.

Joshua Munzon paced Terrafirma with 17 points while Joseph Gabayni added 12 markers in a losing effort as the Dyip remained winless through five games.

Blackwater opened the decisive second quarter rally with a 19-7 run to build a 12 point cushion, 37-25, after a Publico triple and a Casio transition layup. The Bossing kept their foot on the gas pedal from that point and took a 16-point lead at the break, 54-38, and even padding the lead to 22, 76-54, heading into the final frame.
