Sanitarium in Iloilo elevated into hospital

ILOILO CITY – A sanitarium that used to treat leprosy patients in Iloilo has been elevated into a general hospital.

The Department of Health (DOH) inaugurated Wednesday, June 22, the Western Visayas Sanitarium and General Hospital (WVSGH) in Sta. Barbara.

“After 95 years of existence and service, it is now a 300-bed general hospital with specialty in infectious diseases,” said Dr. Judy Ann Dumayas, WVSGH medical chief.

Previously known as Western Visayas Sanitarium (WVS), WVSGH was converted into a general hospital with the passage of Republic Act (RA) No. 11723.

“This is the realization of our dream to have a fully functioning hospital in the second district of Iloilo and to have accessible health care available to all,” said Iloilo Rep. Michael Gorriceta, principal author of RA 11723.

The hospital serves patients from Iloilo and also those from Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Guimaras.

At the height of the pandemic, DOH designated the then WVS as one of the Covid-19 hospitals.

Also present during the inauguration were Health Undersecretary Lilibeth David, Undersecretary Leopoldo Vega, Assistant Secretary Roy Ferrer, Assistant Secretary Romeo Ong, DOH-Region 6 (Western Visayas) Director Adriano Suba-an, DOH-Region 6 Assistant Regional Director Sophia Pulmones, DOH Administrative and Financial Director Roderick Napulan, Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr., and former DOH-Region 6 Director Marlyn Convocar.
