DILG, Cebu top officials meet to come up with 'compromise' on mandatory use of face masks

Top officials of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Cebu Provincial Government held a dialogue in a bid to come out with a ‘compromise’ regarding the optional wearing of face mask amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

DILG Secretary Eduardo Año revealed this on Thursday, June 23, when pressed for the development of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia’s claim of imposing the optional wearing of face masks in well-ventilated places even without the blessings of the department.

“Nung weekend and until the other day (June 22) nagkaroon ng ng dialogue, consultation, meeting ang aming regional director ng DILG Region 7, si RD (Regional Director) Leo Trovela at saka si Gov. Gwen and some provincial officials at kami rin nagkausap din kami ni Gov. Gwen over the phone at maganda naman sapagkat nagseek kami ng compromise or common solution for this issue (Last weekend until the other day, DILG Region 7 Director Leo Trovela and Gov. Gwen and some provincial officials and we also talked over the phone where the conversation went fine as we sought for a compromise or common solution for this issue),’’ Año said.

Citing the Cebu provincial government, Año stated that the discussions went well as both parties were cooperative with the DILG taking note of the ordinance issued by the provincial council.

The DILG chief noted that the Cebu provincial government will craft the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) before the ordinance can be implemented.

“So ngayon ay kasalukuyan nagka-craft sila ng IRR doon to rationalize the wearing of face mask at aantayin natin yung resulta ng IRR bago tayo magbibigay ng panibagong guidance (At present, they are crafting the IRR to rationalize the wearing of face mask and we will just wait for the result of the IRR before we hand out a new guidance),’’ he added.

He added that the Cebu provincial government also will have to conduct public consultations where public opinions or inputs will be taken into consideration. Ika-craft din nila kung papaano enforce yung ordinansa rationalizing the wearing of face masks (They will also craft the IRR on how the ordinance rationalizing the wearing of face masks will be enforced).
