REFLECTIONS TODAY
“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you.” For Jesus, this “Golden Rule” summarizes the Law and the Prophets, that is, the Sacred Scriptures. This rule is shared by ancient wisdom traditions. Confucius teaches, “Do not do unto others, what you do not want they do unto you.” The Babylonian Talmud of the Jews likewise declares, “What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow.” And in Scriptures, Tobit instructs his son Tobias, “Do to no one what you yourself hate” (Tb 4:15). What is universally applicable to all is right also to me; likewise, what I wish to be applicable to me, should also be valid to everyone. All human beings share the same dignity.
Gospel • Mt 7:6, 12-14
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces.
“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the Law and the Prophets.
“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.”
