Manila Cathedral commemorates Sin's death anniversary

The Manila Cathedral in Intramuros on Tuesday, June 21, commemorated the 17th death anniversary Jaime Cardinal Sin.

In a Facebook post, the Cathedral thanked the former Manila prelate for being the voice of the people.

"We commemorate today the 17th death anniversary of the beloved former Archbishop of Manila, Jaime L. Cardinal Sin," read the post.

"Thank you for listening to us and being our voice," it further read.

Cardinal Sin, the 32nd Archbishop of Manila, passed away in 2005 due to multiple organ failure.

He was retired as archbishop of Manila by Pope John Paul II in September 2003, a month after he celebrated his 75th birthday.

Hailed as a hero of Edsa I, the People Power which brought to an end the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, Cardinal Sin served the Manila See for 29 years.

During his 29-year pastoral stewardship as Archbishop of Manila, he was able to erect 109 parishes, in 17 cities and municipalities in Metro Manila with a Catholic population of almost 12 million.

He also ordained 530 priests and was principal consecrator for 15 bishops.

At the time of his retirement, the archdiocese had been divided and given rise to five new dioceses, namely, Cubao, Pasig, Parañaque, Kalookan and Novaliches.
