The Philippines on Tuesday, June 21, will experience its longest daytime and shortest nighttime, in an astronomical event known as “summer solstice.”

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the summer solstice will fall on June 21 at 5:14 p.m. (Philippine Time).

“By then, the sun will reach its most northerly point in the sky, in Cancer, at a declination of 23.5°N,” it said in its June astronomical diary.

“During the June solstice, the northern hemisphere will experience the longest day, and this day also marks the first day of summer. Consequently, this day marks the first day of winter in the southern hemisphere, wherein the sun stays lesser time staying above the horizon than any other day of the year,” it added.

On Tuesday, the country’s daytime will last for 12 hours, 59 minutes, and 27 seconds, as the sun will rise at 5:28 a.m. and will set at 6:27 p.m.

The summer solstice is the day of the year with the longest daylight period and hence the shortest night, which usually occurs on June 21 or June 22 in the northern hemisphere.

For some countries, particularly those that have four seasons in a year, the solstice marks the start of summer in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere.
