Rocked by successive shooting incidents, Bacolod cops establish checkpoints to catch gunmen on bikes

BACOLOD CITY – The Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) said Monday, June 20, that they will conduct random checkpoint operations following a series of shooting incidents this month here by motorcycle-riding gunmen.

Nine shooting incidents were reported here since June 1, the most recent of which was in Barangay 31 Sunday, June 19.

The latest victim was 38-year-old tricycle Christofer Guanzon of Barangay Taculing here, who, according to the police, surrendered through “Oplan: Tokhang” in 2017.

Guanzon was shot dead by a lone unidentified gunman on a motorcycle in front of his 14-year-old son while was attending the birth anniversary of his sister in Barangay 31. Guanzon was taken to a hospital where he died.

Police Col. Thomas Joseph Martir, Bacolod police director, said police recovered from Guanzon a sachet of suspected shabu while he was being treated at the hospital.

Police said the victim may have been tailed by the gunman as he reportedly came from Barangay 27 here before he went to his sister’s birth anniversary.

Martir said they have already identified suspects in these shooting incidents and are preparing to file charges against them.

Martir said they are intensifying their campaign against these so-called riding-in-tandems since most of the cases were perpetrated by persons on motorcycles.

“We will be focusing on how to prevent these incidents,” Martir said, adding that they are trying their best to resolve these cases.

He noted that the incidents were not related and directed all 10 station commanders to solve the shooting incidents in their areas and maximize their police deployment on the streets.

Shooting incidents have been reported each in every police station here.

The first incident happened in Barangay Sum-ag under Police Station 9 where two persons were wounded and the suspect arrested on June 1.

This was followed by another incident in Barangay Alangilan under Police Station 5 where a caretaker of a private property was killed by an unidentified perpetrator on June 5.

Three days later, a man suspected to be a police asset was gunned down in Barangay 35 under Police Station 1 on June 8.

On June 11, a tricycle driver was also shot dead by an unidentified lone gunman in the downtown area in Barangay 13 under Police Station 1, followed by that of a Chinese businessman in Barangay 5, under Police Station 2, on June 14.

Two days later, an alleged drug personality was killed in Barangay Singcang-Airport, under Police Station 8, on June 16. The following day, a man suspected to be a police asset was killed in Barangay Banago, under Police Station 3, on June 17.

A policeman wounded two civilians in a shooting incident in Barangay 26, under Police Station 4, on June 19. These four incidents were recorded in just a week.

Martir said that two incidents were drug-related – the cases in Barangays Singcang-Airport and Banago.
