Gatchalian affirms support for incoming DepEd admin, vows to resolve PH's education crisis

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Monday, June 20 affirmed his support to the incoming Department of Education’s (DepEd) administration saying he is committed to work with Vice President-eleect Sara Duterte-Carpio who is set to take the lead of the agency.

Duterte-Carpio took her oath of office on Sunday, June 19 in Davao City.

Gatchalian, who won a fresh six-year term mandate in the last May 9, 2022 elections, is pushing for the full reopening of all schools, child development centers, and Alternative Learning System (ALS) community learning centers by August.

The senator, who is set to retain his chairmanshop of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture, also cited the need to focus on improving the performance of the country’s learners after being negatively impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also emphasized the need to implement learning recovery programs focused on reading and numeracy to address learning loss.

“Sa pagpasok ng bagong administrasyon, tututukan natin ang pagbangon ng sektor ng edukasyon mula sa pinsalang dinulot ng pandemya (With new administration enters, we will focus on the recovery and of the education sector from the damage brought about by the pandemic),” Gatchalian said.

“Makikipagtulungan tayo sa DepEd, sa pangunguna ng ating Pangalawang Pangulo upang mabuksan nang ligtas ang ating mga paaralan, at matiyak na maihahatid natin sa kabataang Pilipino ang dekalidad na edukasyon (We will work with the DepEd, to be led by the Vice President, so we can reopen our schools safely and ensure that we can provide our Filipino youth with quality education),” the lawmaker added.

Gatchalian said with Duterte-Carpio garnering more than 61 percent of the votes in this year’s elections, he is confident she can use her political capital to implement the needed reforms in the basic education sector, including the decongestion of the K-12 basic education curriculum to focus on basic skills.

He also stressed the role of the proposed Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II) in addressing the education crisis.

Among the powers and functions of the EDCOM II is to recommend the improvement in the harmonization of policies and programs of the DepEd, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
