Senator Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara on Monday, June 20 said the push to abolish the K-to-12 education system should be reviewed.
‘’Not necessarily with a view to abandoning it kasi sa tingin ko di pa talaga siya naimplementa ng maigi (because it was not implemented well),’’ Angara said.
The chairman of the Senate finance committee said there are many issues to be discussed in the implementation of K-12.
‘’Funding is one of the issues that needs addressing at hopefully post pandemic, mabigyan talaga ng focus Ito since nagbukas na ang bansa at pa recover na ang ekonomiya (this should be given focus now that the country has opened up and its economy is on the way to recovery),’’ he explained.
‘’Pwede mag bigay ng naaakmang pondo dito sa Edukasyon (the country is now ready to finance the education sector),’’ he added.
Incoming Vice President and incoming Education Secretary Sara ‘’Inday’’ Duterte said the push to abolish the K-to-12 education system is an issue that “cannot be decided overnight.’'
Like Angara, Duterte said the proposal to scrap the K-12 program needs to be discussed.
In a press briefing in Davao city, Duterte said the proposal is something that could not be decided overnight.
She said she and President-elect Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr, had discussed this issue.
“He already gave instructions with regard to the review of the implementation of the K-12 program of the Department of Education,” Duterte said.
In 2020, ACT Teachers Representative France Castro said the K-12 “congested curriculum” was a failure, resulting in Grade 4 students from the Philippines recording the lowest scores among participants from 58 countries in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study 2019.
