You’ll be surprised by how much these drag artists have spent on their craft
Last June 18, the category is Filipino Drag Excellence as some the best local drag artists gathered together at Tipple & Slaw, Pop-up Katipunan to celebrate “Pride and Power.” The event, made possible by Sony Music Philippines and Pop Emergency Podcast, honored the valuable contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community across the globe and the ability of music in telling the community’s stories, from its struggles to its colorful triumphs.
“The event was called ‘Pride and Power to recognize that Pride is not just an extravagant one-month celebration every June, but that we are given the chance to make a statement and empower not just our artists, but the LGBTQIA+ Community for an experience they’ll remember all-year-round and even after,” the organizing team said. “It’s making a stand, but doing it with a bang.”

Apart from the music of DJs Jer Dee and Marky Saavedra, lighting up the stage with their “house down boots” lip-synch performances were drag artists Eva Le Queen, Marina Summers, Myx Chanel, Alpha Venti, Prince, and OV Cunt of Drag Playhouse Philippines. After their show, Manila Bulletin Lifestyle got a chance to kiki with these phenomenal performance artists. Here’s what we learned about them.

Hey, queens! First off, what is your go-to lip-synch song?
Myx Chanel: “Levitating” by Dua Lipa
Marina Summers: “Woman” by Doja Cat
OV Cunt: “Minsan Ang Minahal Ay Ako” by Celeste Legaspi
Prince: Anything Lady Gaga
Alpha Venti: Everything from Lil Nas X. But, specifically, his “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow
Eva Le Queen: “Defying Gravity” from the musical “Wicked”
What is the best makeup hack you’ve learned?
MC: Spirit gums stick everything forever. (Spirit gum is an adhesive used for affixing costumes and wigs)
MS: Moisturize before doing anything.
OC: Shave off my brows.
P: Doing eye makeup before the base
AV: Underpainting. It is one thing to set the shape with simple over-the-foundation makeup. But when you build that with the foundation, it makes a difference.
ELQ: Skincare first before makeup.
Name your estimate. How much have you spent on your drag?
MC: Probably, in the six-digits now.
MS: More than enough!
OC: P500,000 plus
P: More than half a million
AV: More than what I am earning.
ELQ: Half a million.
Who is your favorite ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ queen?
MC: Sasha Velour
MS: As of now, Aquaria.
OC: Sharon Needles, although she is canceled.
P: Jinkx Monsoon
AV: Rosé from season 13.
ELQ: RuPaul Charles
What is your go-to cocktail drink?
MC: Jägerbomb
MS: Gin and tonic
OC: Anything with alcohol
P: Mocktail. I do not drink alcohol.
AV: Cosmopolitan.
ELQ: Gin and tonic
Who is your pop diva icon?
MC: As of the moment, Dua Lipa.
MS: Beyoncé
OC: Definitely Lady Gaga.
P: Lady Gaga, of course.
AV: Megan Thee Stallion
ELQ: Whitney Houston.
Are drag shows only for LGBTQIA+ Community?
MC: No, it is for anyone who’s going to give me money .
MS: No. It is for anyone who needs to see me and all this beauty!
OC: No. It is for everybody.
P: I don’t think so. As RuPaul said, “We are all naked and the rest is drag.” Drag started when we are young. We are all in drag. We are all part of this performance.
AV: It is open to everyone. The goal of drag shows, while it is queer in its roots, it is for everyone regardless of their gender and identity.
ELQ: No. Drag shows are for people who know how to respect people.
What are you marching for for this Pride Month?
MC: I’m marching for intersex rights.
MS: The marginalized sector of society, including the LGBTQIA+ Community. I’m marching for the art of drag and to keep alive these trying times.
OC: I’m Marching for anybody who is marginalized, anybody who feels like they’re different. In our community, technically we are all different, but people always make sure to point out that you are different. Different and individuality.
P: Growing up, I’m open to my parents that I am gay. I don’t have a sad story. I’m marching for all the queer people who were free since day one.
AV: I’m marching for gender inclusion. As you can see in the show, there aren’t many kings like me. After my visibility, I want to see more drag kings coming out—more people who do what I do.
ELQ: I’m marching for better work conditions for drag artists.
