Matthew Wright keeps focus as PH Cup approaches

Matthew Wright doesn’t want his contract situation with Phoenix Super LPG to cause a big distraction as the season-opening PBA Philippine Cup approaches.

Wright’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the first conference, and there are speculations that one of the PBA’s premier scorers is set for a big move overseas.

But Wright said he would rather deal with what’s ahead of him and that is to help Phoenix make a good run in the All-Filipino tournament.

“To be honest, I don’t want to distract the team,” Wright said during the PBA’s Media Day held Thursday, June 2 at Novotel Manila in Cubao, Quezon City.

“I don’t want to distract the management and coaches because as much as I hate to say, but everyone’s asking and everyone wants to know. But I just want everyone to know that I’m gonna be their teammate, I’m gonna be their locker room guy and I’m gonna give my 100 percent."

Negotiations are still ongoing between both sides, with Phoenix hoping to secure the six-year cager beyond the Philippine Cup.

Though rumors of heading abroad, most likely in Japan’s B.League, are rampant, Wright is not closing the door on getting a deal done with the Fuel Masters.

But that remains easier said than done at this point.

“We’ll that’s tough to answer,” Wright said when asked what would it take for Phoenix for him to stick around, “because I’ve given everything that I’ve possibly could.

“But negotiations are still going on so I think it’s a matter of us meeting halfway. That’s how it is. I go high, they go low and then we meet in the middle. That’s how negotiations and all business aspects go.”

Wright signed his current pact back in 2019, and has since become one of the established stars in the league.

But his rise has also opened doors for him to possibly seek better opportunities elsewhere.

For now, Wright’s focus is on donning his No. 7 jersey to try and lead Phoenix to a winning start.

“I just want for us to be very focused on San Miguel (Phoenix’s first opponent) and not for everyone else wondering and tsismising all about where I’m gonna go and stuff like that.”
