Bishop supports repatriation of OFWs from Sri Lanka

Balanga Bishop Ruperto C. Santos has expressed support for the repatriation of Filipino workers affected by the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

Bishop Santos, vice chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People (CBCP-ECMI) cited the efforts of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in reaching out to the OFWs in Sri Lanka.

“The protective move and caring efforts of the DFA for our Filipinos in Sri Lanka are praiseworthy. The DFA simply wants to bring them home safe and sound,” said Bishop Santos over Radio Veritas. “It is important to let our Filipino migrants know that they can depend on the government to protect them in times of crisis,” he added.

The Church leader urged the faithful to pray for Sri Lanka to recover fast from its dire economic situation.

“In that perilous condition, let us turn to God and pray for His providence to bring peace and prosperity to Sri Lanka,” Bishop Santos stressed.

According to records, more than 600 Filipinos are living and working in Sri Lanka.
