Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual(LGBTQIA+) organizations as well as barangay officials in Quezon City’s fifth district celebrated Pride Month on Saturday, June 18.
Incumbent Mayor Joy Belmonte was present during the event held at the Barangay Greater Lagro Centennial Park.
Belmonte said all the residents in the city are safe from discrimination regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity expression and the LGBTQIA+ community can expect a caring, fair, inclusive, and progressive Quezon City.
She also encouraged the LGBTQIA+ to join the “People’s Council of Quezon City” so that they can participate in creating programs for the city residents.
In 2014, the local government implemented the Gender Fair Ordinance that protects the members of the said community against any form of discrimination.
There are also social hygiene and sundown clinics established in the city to help individuals living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Also present at the event were Brgy. Greater Lagro Chairman Leo Garra, District 5 Action Officer William Bawag, and LGBTQIA rights advocate Perci Cendana.
The city government will hold its celebration of Pride Month on June 25 at the Quezon City Memorial Circle.
