Magnolia fended off a late Ginebra fightback to take an 89-84 victory in the first Manila Clasico of the season in the PBA Philippine Cup before a good-sized Father’s Day crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, June 19.

Rome Dela Rosa played hero anew as he nailed a huge triple with 1:45 left in the game to douse the searing rally from the Gin Kings late in the final frame after coming back from 14-points down early in the second half.
Ian Sangalang showed the way with 24 points and nine rebounds while Jio Jalalon provided support with 19 markers for the Paul Lee-less Hotshots who also had to buck the ejection of Calvin Abueva in the final frame.
With the win, the Hotshots have now won the last four editions of their historic rivalry with Ginebra and coach Chito Victolero gave full credit to his players’ desire to win.
“I think it's the desire, the will to win and mental toughness alam naman namin kung gaano kalakas yung Ginebra, kumpleto materyales lahat andun na yung crowd talagang ang dami naming bigyan ng pansin,” said Victolero.
“Sabi ko nga we just try na mag-execute lang yung game plan namin and at the same time mag enjoy kami because Fathers’ Day tapos Clasico pa. Ayun lang, kailangan lang namin i-enjoy yung adversity, yung challenges na binigay sa amin,” he added.
LA Tenorio paced the Kings with 15 points while reigning MVP Scottie Thompson added 12 markers. Japeth Aguilar, who led Ginebra in their first two wins, struggled against the Magnolia defense with only nine points across his name.
Trailing by eight, 81-73,with still six minutes left in the final frame, Ginebra, triggered by a four-point play from Arvin Tolentino, embarked on a 9-1 spurt to tie the game at 82-all.
Jalalon and Aris Dionisio then nailed back-to-back hits although Christian Standhardinger retaliated for the Kings with an inside basket. That set up the huge Dela Rosa triple to create the much-needed separation before the Hotshots held on to their defense in the final minute to keep the Gin Kings scoreless the rest of the way.
Magnolia survived a grueling stretch in their schedule, playing three games in five days for a 2-3 record in the standings. Ginebra, on the other hand, absorbed its first loss after opening the season with two close wins for a 2-1 slate.
