'For benefit of the Filipino children': Briones rallies support for incoming DepEd secretary Sara Duterte
Outgoing Education Secretary Leonor Briones congratulated Vice President-elect Sara Duterte as she took oath as the 15th vice president of the Philippines on Saturday, June 19, and urged the public to support the incoming secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).

Issuing a statement, DepEd said that it is one with the nation in congratulating Duterte on her inauguration for the second-highest post in the country.
“Likewise, we are enthusiastic to welcome VP Sara to DepEd as the incoming Education Secretary and work with her in proactively addressing the challenges in basic education,” DepEd said.
Briones and her team also expressed eagerness to “assist” Duterte in “ensuring a smooth transition of priority education programs and policies” --- including the Basic Education Development Plan (BEDP) 203 --- which “can help the incoming administration in implementing further reforms.”
Moreover, Briones also called on stakeholders, including our teachers, non-teaching personnel, field officials, parents, and partners, to “unite and collaborate anew” under the leadership of Duterte for “the benefit of the Filipino children.”
The outgoing DepEd leadership also looks forward to the upcoming years of Duterte’s leadership as the Vice President and the Education Secretary as “we continue to deliver quality and inclusive basic education for our Filipino learners.”
In a letter addressed to Duterte dated June 18, Briones also looks forward to Duterte’s leadership in the country’s largest bureaucracy. “I look forward to turning over to you the leadership of DepEd,” she said.
With the department led by no less than the VP herself, Briones said this “speaks to the highest priority that education will be given under the incoming administration.”
Briones also noted that during her term, Sara’s father, outgoing President Duterte, also helped in laying the foundations for DepEd to address the challenge of decisively elevating the quality of Philippine basic education.
“I have no doubt that under your leadership, the country will see the fruition of basic education’s pivot to quality, enhanced by your new insights and innovations,” Briones told the incoming DepEd chief.
