Belgium survives Bulgaria for 3-5 in VNL

Belgium woke up from a two-set slumber and survived a resurgent Bulgarian crew, 25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 20-25, 17-15, Sunday in the Volleyball Nations League Women’s Leg at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Britt Herbots starred anew with back-to-back attacks followed by a kill from Silke Van Avermaet to seal the win for the Belgians and close out their Week 2 campaign on a bright note.

The win was a follow up on Belgium’s five-set victory against Poland Saturday that hiked their win-loss tally to 3-5 for six points.

The six-foot Herbots, who is coming off a 33-point output against the Poles, unleashed another monster game of 26 points built on 23 kills and three blocks while Van Avermaet chipped in 13 points including nine attacks.

Marlies Janssens added 10 points.

Momentum was on Bulgaria after putting up a rock-solid net defense, leading 9-6 in the fifth frame when Belgium regained its composure on Herbots attacking at all angles.

The Belgians were at match point, 14-12, but a service error turned things around that led to the Bulgarians scoring two more points to gain the needed 15-14 advantage.

But this time, Herbots refused to be intimidated and delivered the killer blows, along with Van Avermaet.

Setter Lora Kitipova distributed the ball well with five Bulgarians scoring in double figures, but they fell short in the crunch.

Maria Yordanova scored 19 points, Nasya Dimitrova and Silvana Chausheva added 14 points apiece, and Miroslava Paskova and Mira Todorova added 13 and 11 points for Bulgaria, which absorbed its sixth defeat in eight matches for six points.
