CEBU CITY – Income generated by Oslob, Cebu from tourism significantly went down in 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Oslob, a fourth-class municipality that gained worldwide prominence due to its whale shark-watching activities, only earned P3.4 million from tourism activities in 2021.
Figures are based on the 2021 Annual Audit Report of the Commission on Audit (COA).
The town’s 2021 earnings are way lower than the P38.3 million earned in 2020, the year that the pandemic started. In 2019, the town was able to generate P190.2 million.
Whale shark-watching activities remain to be the town’s top income generating asset based on the COA report. The report showed that Oslob’s whale shark watching activities only earned P2,798,210 in 2021.
Aside from whale shark-watching activities, the town also earns revenues from other famous tourist destinations such as Sumilon Island and Luka and Tumalog Falls.
Before the worldwide pandemic struck, the town used to draw hundreds of tourists in the coastal barangay of Tan-awan to take a glimpse at gentle giants locally called as “butandings.”
