NU draws first blood vs De La Salle, moves a win away from season sweep, UAAP title

Undefeated National University made quick work of De La Salle, 25-20, 25-12, 25-21, in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 84 women's volleyball Finals to draw first blood and move a win away from a tournament sweep and the championship Saturday night, June 18 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Camilla Lamina's ball distribution was on point as she tossed 20 excellent sets to help four of her teammates, namely Michaela Belen, Alyssa Solomon, Princess Robles, and Ivy Lacsina, to score in double-digits.
Belen and Solomon fired 15 points apiece while Robles and Lacsina hammered down 12 markers each. Sheena Toring also had seven points built on two blocks.
After a one-sided affair in the second set, De La Salle showed some resistance in the third and last frame but the duo of Belen and Solomon proved to be too much for the Lady Spikers.
"Ginamit namin 'yong time ng stepladder para maka-prepare kami at inaral, nag-polish namin ng galaw namin," said Lady Bulldogs head coach Karl Dimaculangna. "Nung nalaman namin sino kalaban namin, doon na kami nag-aral. Maganda naman kasi na-execute namin nang maayos."
The Lady Spikers only trailed by two points down the stretch, 22-20, before Solomon soared for back-to-back attacks for the Lady Bulldogs to reach match point.
Solomon, the league's top spiker, however, committed a service error in the ensuing play which provided a glimmer of hope for De La Salle.
Belen, for her part, spoiled the party and put the finishing touches for the Lady Bulldogs as she scored a solid off-the-block-hit off a combination play for the win.
No other Lady Spiker hit the double-digit mark as Leila Cruz emerged as the highest scorer with six points.
Fifi Sharma, Alleiah Malaluan, and Jolina Dela Cruz were all limited to five points each and only capitalized on the 25 points given by NU off its errors.
The Lady Bulldogs may close out the Finals series as early as Tuesday, June 21, in Game 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the same venue.
