ITS THE SMALL THINGS
Last week, I ended my article with these words: In a world where you can be anything, be kind.
As the world has slowly (but surely) opened up, and gone back to normal – most definitely more faster paced in some areas of the world than others –we cannot help but feel overwhelmed at times. After all, although resistant at the start, we did live through two years of slower days. There are moments when we stop to think back at those days, and though the days were grueling and long having to maneuver through a time of uncertainty, the years were fast, and life did go on. But if there is anything at all that stood out during those days, it is the people who came forward – those who made their presence felt in your life despite the physical hindrances. They have become my constants, and when I think about what makes them stand out in my books, it is the certainty, assurance, comfort and security they gave to me at a time when it was so much easier to be preoccupied with personal matters. They were generous at a time when it would have been acceptable to take time for themselves. At the end of the day, as humans, we never forget how others make us feel.
In a world that can make you feel many things – a full spectrum of emotions in one day, even –kindness stands out. Especially when given with the purest intent, at a time when one may expect it the least. But when we could be giving out kindness, and love, why then does so much toxicity, hate and negativity shadow and cloud or everyday? I realized that perhaps we have failed to find inspiration in the everyday mundane things and routines. We have gravitated towards taking the small things for granted, and it is not at all a bad thing to look back at the days we were confined at home, as a reality check of what truly matters.
Finding inspiration can be tougher on some days, while on others,it is free flowing. Knowing and being aware of our personal sources of inspiration always gets us off to a good start. It is as simple as surrounding yourself with people who bring out your positivity, and the best in you. Sometimes, in finding inspiration, we must choose wisely, and discern. It can involve sacrifice at times, and looking hard, but it will always be there if we make an effort to widen our perspectives and broaden our horizons.
More often than not however, and it is another thing we take for granted, we can find inspiration within ourselves. All it takes is some quiet time alone, and introspection. Let us never underestimate the power of pondering and thinking – especially solo. Sometimes, it is what we need in the midst of making a hard decision – it is when our inner-voice and our gut-feel speak to us the loudest. Other times, we just need a breather, and then a refreshed mind and self takes us on. Whatever the case may be, I find it very important to always set time for yourself alone, doing something that allows you to unwind and get your mind off of things. Remember, even the most well-oiled of machines need time to rest.
So never again underestimate the notion of finding inspiration from yourself – your past actions, your present thoughts, and your future hopes. Go in the direction of your dreams, and think out loud if need be. Introspection may just be your path to finding lasting inspiration.
